چکیده

The litter size of homozygous Booroola Merino ewes results in high perinatal mortality. One subcutaneous implant of crystaline oestradiol in silastic tubing in heterozygous Booroola Merino ewes decreased ovulation rate from 3.18 -r0.15 (n = 39) to 2.03 & 0.14 (n = 35), and decreased litter size (5 8 weeks pregnant) from 2.49 + 0.13 (n = 39) to 1.47 + 0.12 (n = 32), providing a useful management tool. In homozygous Booroola Merino ewes ovulation rate decreased from 4.11 +, 0.28 (n = 18) to 2.11 k 0.28 (n = 18). Two implants prevented ovulation in about half of the animals and only 9 of 38 such heterozygous ewes had viable foetuses at 7 weeks.

Mutations in BMPR-IB and BMP-15 genes are associated with litter size in Small Tailed Han sheep (Ovis aries).

The Small Tailed Han is a prolific local sheep breed in China. The bone morphogenetic protein receptor IB (BMPR-IB) gene, which affects the fecundity of Booroola Merino sheep, and the bone morphogenetic protein 15 (BMP-15) gene, which affects the fecundity of Inverdale, Hanna, Belclare, Cambridge, and Lacaune sheep, were studied as candidate genes associated with the prolificacy of Small Tailed...

Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Analysis of the Bone Morphogenetic Protein Receptor IB and Growth and Differentiation Factor 9 Genes in Rayini Goats (Capra hircus)

The FecB, a mutation in the bone morphogenetic protein receptor IB (BMPR-IB) gene, which increases the fecundity of Booroola Merino sheep, and FecGH, a mutation in the Growth and Differentiation Factor 9 (GDF9), which affects the fecundity of Cambridge and Belclare sheep in a dose sensitive manner, were analyzed as candidate genes associated with the prolificacy in Rayini goats. These polymorph...

Effect of inbred on reproduction and body weight of sheep in a closed Booroola flock

Results of the analysis are presented of the effect of inbreeding on selected reproduction traits and body weight in a Booroola flock kept closed for 14 years at the Institute of Genetics and Animal Breeding, Jastrzębiec. The mean inbred in lambs rose linearly until 2002, when it reached the level of 9.81%, ranging from 0 to 31.7%. No inbred effect was observed on ovulation rate, fertility, lit...

Lifetime Reproductive Performance of Booroola Merino X Romney Ewes of Differing Genotype for the Booroola Fecundity Gene and Romney Ewes

First cross Booroola Merino x Romney (B x R) ewes born in 1975, 1976, 1978 and 1979 were classified as being heterozygous (F+) or non carriers (++) for the Booroola fecundity gene. Their performance as hoggets (< 1 year of age) I and to six years of age (1975 and 1976 bornonly) was compared with contemporary Romney (R) ewes. As hoggets, the F+ ewes had ovulation rates about 0.5 higher than ++ B...

DETECTION OF POLYMORPHISM IN BOOROOLA GENE (FecB) AND ITS ASSOCIATION WITH LITTER SIZE IN ZEL SHEEP BREED IN IRAN

Sixty eight adult ewes of Zel sheep breed were screened with forced PCR RFLP method for the detection of the FecB gene and its effects on litter size. Genomic DNA was extracted from the blood of 68 Zel matured ewes with litter size varied from 1 to 2 lambs per ewe lambing. Digestion of the FecB gene (190 base pairs) with AvaII restriction enzyme resulted in none carrier 190 bp band wild type in...
